Lord Crewe's Charity

Nathaniel, Lord Crewe (Bishop of Durham 1674-1721) set up a trust in his will, for the benefit of (amongst others) "necessitious clergy" of the area now covering the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle.

Grants may be made to:

  • Clergy who are either serving or retired from service within the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle and the dependants thereof;
  • Widows, widowers and other dependants of deceased clergy who were serving in the said area at the time of their decease;
  • Widows, widowers and other dependants of clergy who previously served in the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle, who are now residing in the said area.

Grants are made entirely at the discretion of the Trustees. Although they are most likely to give most of their grant money to helpclergy with dependant children they have limited funds to enable them to meet other acute needs.

Applications for grants are considered twice annually (although in cases of particular emergency it may be possible for a grant to be made between normal meetings of the Trustees.

Update March 2012 - Education Grants 2012 - 2013.

Application forms for these grants are now available from the above addresses. Any necessitous member of the clergy (whether stipendiary, SSM or on any other basis) licensed in the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle whose total famiy income from all sources does not exceed £45,320 is invited to ask for an Application Form.

All clergy licensed or having permission to officiate in the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle may apply for an award during each year of any dependant's attendance on a first full-time degree or equivalent skills course. The strict limitations of the household income level in the above paragraph need not necessarily constitute an impediment.

Closing date for Applications is 8th June 2012

Resettlement Grants

As far as resources permit, the Trustees of Lord Crewe's Charity will make a grant to any priest holding a Licence from the Bishops of Durham or Newcastle whose retirement from service in the diocese is formally announced by the relevant Bishop's Office, to assist him/her with the removal costs of the transition from tied accomodation into the terminal residence when the diocese makes no contribution. Applications for this are not required as any grant, where applicable, will be awarded after official notification from the diocese of a forthcoming retirement.
