This unique Church initiative relates the Church’s ministry and mission to the cultural life of the community. Working in partnership with parishes and other bodies, the Chaplaincy’s wide-ranging work includes: offering an informed and respected voice concerning the relationship between the spiritual and the arts; advising on issues relating to the arts and on the commissioning and placing of artworks; relating the arts to spirituality and worship; encouraging theological reflection through conferences, workshops and retreats; assisting with communication needs and acting as a resource to the parishes in their mission.

The Northumbria Deaf Mission is an Anglican Mission established in 1876 to minister to the spiritual, worship, pastoral and welfare needs of the deaf and hard of hearing and is the agency through which the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle seek to fulfil their responsibilities for Ministry among deaf people. The Mission is not formally integrated into the diocesan structures although its joint presidents are the Bishops of Durham and Newcastle. The Dean of Newcastle and the Archdeacons of Durham and Northumberland are members of the Management Committee to which the Bishops each appoint two representatives.

The Northumbrian Industrial Mission is an ecumenical body founded in 1971 to bring together under common management the mission of the sponsoring churches and other sponsoring bodies, to industry and commerce in North Durham and Northumberland. Chaplains now have a broader remit combining an industrial focus – the traditional Chaplaincy in the workplace – with a more holistic, multi-discipline approach in collaboration with other ministries and local agencies to tackle economic regeneration issues in their local areas. More recently NIM has refocused its method of working to increase its ability to work ecumenically in partnership with local church structures to encourage, enable and resource them to engage with, and bear witness in, the secular world and its institutions especially the world of work.

Tees Valley Ministry is a project of the Churches’ Regional Commission working in the Tees Valley and South-West Durham and was formed from the merger of the Teesside Industrial Mission and Respond!
TVM exists to create a mutual understanding, trust and support between industry, commerce, community and the churches. Its values are:
- TVM acts as a sign of God’s presence and involvement in the experience of work, paid or unpaid.
- Economic structures, business, wealth creation and employment are important in God’s creative purpose for all people everywhere.
- The Christian Gospel calls the Church to work for justice and to be alongside all people and communities, especially those marginalised by the way we organise our economic and social life.
- Economic, social and spiritual regeneration is the concern of the Church.
- TVM works for unity in diversity within the churches and other faith communities and for a more holistic Society
