Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese and the seat of the Bishop of Durham. It hosts many of our most important diocesan events - confirmation services, ordinations of new ministers and various celebrations. It is particularly popular at the great festivals of the Christian year - Christmas and Easter. The Cathedral also has an important role in the life of the city of Durham, hosting important civic events, university degree ceremonies and services for local schools.

Durham Cathedral is the greatest Norman building in England and is a World Heritage Site. It is an icon of the northeast and has been voted Britain's most popular building in more than one poll.

St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede are both buried in the Catehdral and there are historic connections with many of the other northern saints.

The Cathedral is open every day for worship and visitors. Entry is free.
