Ian Cundy Thanksgiving

28/09/2009

On Sunday 27th September, Cathedral Evensong was a service of Thanksgiving for the Life of the Rt Revd Ian Cundy, Bishop of Peterborough and former Warden of Cranmer Hall in Durham who died in May.  Many of Ian's friends from his time in Durham joined his wife Jo and family to share in the service.

The service, which also celebrated 40 years of Ian's ministry as deacon, priest and bishop, included words and music which had particular significance for him, and which he had chosen for his funeral.  There was also an anthem written specially for him by Christopher Gower, formerly Master of Music at Peterborough Cathedral - the words are the Celtic prayer: 'May the road rise to meet you . . . '

The sermon was preached by, the Rt Revd John Pritchard, Bishop of Oxford, who had worked with Ian at Cranmer Hall and succeeded him as Warden.  And John particularly emphasised Ian's love of the North East.  He 'dug himself into Weardale' and was 'earthed in the North East', he said.  But above all 'he was earthed in God'.
