To Russia With Love
12/06/2009
After a few false starts the parishioners of St John the Divine at Stillington had almost given up hope of finding a home for their elderly piano. By chance the Reader at St John's, Pam Russell, had a friend connected with the Chernobyl Children’s Project (UK).
Alan Wade was delighted to pick up the piano and the photo shows it ready for loading onto the pantecnican to travel on the Humanitarian Aid convoy to Belarus – a journey of 1,500 miles across Holland, Germany and Poland.
Pam Russell is on the left of the picture, with Bob the driver, Alan Wade, Chernobyl Aid co-ordinator and Alison Borer, St John's Churchwarden.
The aid included donated food, toiletries and medicines plus computers for administrative and learning activities for the disabled children.
These children and adults are still suffering from cancer 23 years after the nuclear power plant explosion in 1986, where tons of radioactive materials were released into the air. Time has not been a healer for the people of Belarus and the greatest fear is for the children of future generations.
Please pray for these people, for the health workers and all who support with aid. And pray that we all can become guardians of God’s world so this may never happen again.
