Lines of Continuity
15/06/2009
An astonishing task in an astonishing place.
Sunderland calligrapher Susan Moor is seen working on a full size copy of an opening from the Codex Amiatinus in St Peter’s, Monkwearmouth where it was created at the turn of the 8th century. Susan is at work in front of the doorway through which Bede himself would have come and gone during his years at Monkwearmouth.
Susan’s commission came from Professor Ewan Clayton as part of Sunderland University’s contribution to the Wearmouth-Jarrow bid for World Heritage status. Professor Clayton is helping to develop an international research centre for calligraphy, which takes its inspiration from the world-renowned scriptorium based at the twin monastery.
Susan, who worships at St Andrew’s, Roker, will present her completed work to the church on Thursday 6th August, as part of the university’s 'Lines of Continuity' Calligraphy Symposium. She will lecture on her project at 7.15pm and all are welcome.
