Coundon Church's Learning Porch

22/04/2009

To mark the completion of the work, St James' held a Preview Evening in March to thank all those who have been involved with the project.

The Church now boasts kitchen facilities and disabled toilet. The jewel in the crown is the new exhibition area entitled ‘The Learning Porch’ - see photo.

The magnificent display panels in this area depict the Flora and Fauna of the surrounding countryside, the history of the Church in Coundon, and also of the surrounding villages dating back to the 12th century. Local schools and community groups will be able to utilise these facilities for study and meetings.

English Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of £50,000 towards what was considered to be a most impressive project. Grants of £16,000 were obtained from Charitable Trusts, and the remainder of the money has been raised by non-stop fundraising efforts of the congregation and the community. These efforts are continuing as Phase 3 of the project begins. This will provide furniture and equipment for the study areas and create a glass partitioned Lady Chapel.

Anyone interested in visiting the ‘Learning Porch’ should contact the Revd Gary Nicholson, 01388 603312 or Churchwardens, Ron and Denise Stewart on 01388 605884.
