25 Years of Mission to Seafarers

22/04/2009

Seaham Seafarers Centre recently celebrated twenty five years of Ecumenical Service to the seafarers who visit the Port of Seaham Harbour.

A service of thanksgiving was held at the Mission on Sunday the 15th February. The Preacher was the Rt Revd Mark Bryant the Bishop of Jarrow and 75 friends from Seaham and the surrounding churches were there to support the occasion.

The Bishop spoke about the Mission being a ‘safe haven’ for seafarers and a place where all nationalities are welcomed.

The Mission at Seaham Harbour has been serving seafarers for longer than twenty-five years. Our Mission was an off-shoot of the Mission in Sunderland in Tatum Street. I am sure that many readers will remember that Mission and the service which it gave to seafarers especially during the Second World War.
