Clergy CMD

Introduction
The primary aim of Continuing Ministerial Development is to engender a culture of lifelong learning among the clergy. The Director of Ministry administers the CMD budget, and arranges a CMD programme of opportunities for day or residential learning for clergy.

CMD Grants

  1. Basic Clergy Development Grants. These are available to help clergy undertake a specific course, event, retreat or development project. There would be a form for this and a presumption that an application would be successful. The basic grant would be set at £150 per year. It is not possible to carry funds forward from year to year.  Curates are eligible for Basic Grants subject to the clear written support of their Training Incumbent and the Director of IME 4-7.  Click here for a pdf of the grant application form.
  2. Special Clergy Development Grants.  Click on the link below for advice to clergy on applying for a grant.

Further Degrees
Clergy are encouraged to consider whether at some stage during their ordained ministry an accredited course of study might be appropriate. The diocese considers that a necessary step in this process is a serious conversation with the Director of Ministry. Clergy who enrol for further degrees may apply for a bursary to support their studies which will be considered by the Grants Panel.

Peer Review for Clergy
Since 2002 we have co-ordinated a Ministerial Review Scheme to encourage and enable clergy to support each other.  Peer Review for Clergy is a continuation of the same scheme.
The aim is to provide a helpful time and space for review and reflection guided by an impartial and trained Review Partner.  As such it stands alongside the Episcopal Pastoral Conversations scheme and arrangements for Spiritual Direction.
If you would like to benefit from participating in the scheme as a reviewee, or to become a reviewer, please contact Joyce Parker, email joyce.parker@durham.anglican.org
Clergy in their first incumbency, or who are new to the diocese, or who carry special responsibilities (e.g. Area Deans), are particularly encouraged to participate.

Sabbaticals
As part of the CMD provision the diocese offers a limited number of sabbaticals for clergy each year. Candidates for sabbaticals will normally be nominated through the ‘Pastoral Conversation’ scheme. Nominated candidates should meet with the Director of Ministry to prepare a ‘Sabbatical Proposal Document’.
